On these pages we will give some extracts form our book on the”vintage” techniques that have been used to record the most beautiful songs in the fifties and early sixties .

These tips are far from be complete , pls consider these pages as a beginniner’s guide to mic position, equipment use and unconventional recording techniques, and also a brief excurtion in the story of “how it was recorded”. We are collecting a number of resources from books, web pages and interviews from the men who recorded . as technician or studio musician – songs as those of Sun Studio,Chess, Atlantic, Mercury ,Goldstar , Stax …

This manual aim to be a guide for the acoustician, for project studios and for the musicians that somehow love the sonorities of the years 50 and 60, or however the world of analogic recording. Despite the flessibility of use, the infinite potential of editing and the lack of degradations of the signal, many audio technician keep on preferring analogic recording on reel to reels. We will explain how to combine modern equipments with tube stuff and reels to reels and old mics.Also you will find some tips on bulding an echo-chamber and other D.I.Y projects.

……………….Here a nice combination of sound for guitar amp. We have a Akg 3000 and a Italian unknown ribbon from the fifties –RIEM-. The ribbon helps cutting all unwanted crisp high frequencies. Don’t forget that trying removing too much “modern” frequencies don’t helps with sound quality. Much better to have a mic that don’t record them at all.

You can easily balance the two mics later, to obtain a more vintage or a more detailed sound on the consolle. The amp is separated from other instruments playing in the same room with a large gobo . We don’t need complete isolation, but a bit will surely help in the final mixing

……………..Sure the most interesting instrument to record in a fifty style band is the double bass.Here an example with a conventional AKG 4000 on the lower part of the bass – for boom boom sound – and a less conventional Electrovoice 664 for the slap Note the position of the bass/mics in the room. They’re on one corner, to obtain more punchy sound . The window glass in the front help with early reflections that sound so nice on double bass!! NOTE that the double bass in this session is the only instruments isolated fron the others. Is in a separate small room to have flexibility in mixing and help to isolate sound  ……….A ribbon mic again. Here’s a Reslo Sound British ribbon from the early/mid sixties ,with impedance transformer for the trumpet. Notice the far position of the mic. Don’t forgetthat excessive blow on a ribbon can damage the inner parts of the mic.          Adels recording session for their new cd release 2008
